Least invasive spine surgery is a new development in the methodology of spinal techniques, which
attempt to treat spinal disorders with minimum disruption of surrounding
tissues. Unlike conventional open surgeries, which often require a very
large incision, and considerable dissection of normal muscle tissue,
these techniques are directed toward minimizing the extent of surgical
intervention. They include special tools and techniques that allow the
surgeon to perform procedures through smaller incisions. These measures
greatly reduce the great risks of infection, blood loss, and
postoperative pain. The progress in the level of imaging technology and
surgical instrumentation has further increased the scope of these
procedures so that they can be brought into use for patients who would
otherwise be considered at risk for conventional surgical methods.
